Volunteers are the heart of the Dubois County Humane Society. Whether you're walking dogs, socializing cats, helping with laundry and cleaning, assisting at events, or supporting fundraising efforts, your time directly improves the lives of homeless animals.
Opportunities are available for a variety of interests, schedules, and experience levels. Whether you can help weekly or occasionally, we'd love to have you on our team.
Foster care is an opportunity to care for an animal that is not yet ready for adoption, including kittens and puppies that are too young, orphaned babies needing bottle feeding, animals recovering from surgery, illness, or injury, and senior or special needs pets.
Foster homes are also needed when DCHS needs to intake a new cat or dog but kennel space is full. Fostering can last from a few days to several months, and DCHS can help match you with a pet based on your availability and comfort level.

Book Buddies gives children the opportunity to read to cats in a calm, low-pressure environment. It helps kids practice reading while giving cats comfort, companionship, and socialization.
Readers of all levels are welcome. This is a wonderful way for children to build confidence and connect with shelter animals.
Give a dog a day out of the shelter! Stop by DCHS and take an adoptable dog on a field trip. Take them on a walk, head to the Riverwalk, or spend the day however you'd like.
Shelter staff will help you find a great match and review basic dog walking techniques. A valid volunteer application and release form are required. Participants must be over 18. Children are welcome with a parent or guardian.
Dogs are due back by 5:45 PM.
The dog will wear an "Adopt Me" vest. Photos, stories, and personality notes help us match dogs with future adopters.
