Lost & Found Pets

Act quickly. Share widely. Help them get home.

If you have lost or found a pet, acting quickly can make a big difference. Please contact the appropriate agency, share clear information, and include the exact location where the animal was lost or found.

Found a Stray Dog?

Stray dog pickup and holding in Dubois County is coordinated through local law enforcement or city/town departments based on where the dog is found. If you have found a stray dog, please contact the correct agency below.

Found a Cat?

Not every outdoor cat is lost. Many cats are owned outdoor pets, barn cats, or community cats. If the cat appears friendly, injured, sick, or you believe it may be someone’s missing pet, contact DCHS for guidance before relocating it.

If you are unable to keep the cat and would like to be considered for intake at DCHS, please complete a surrender form and note that you have found a stray cat. Submission of the form does not guarantee intake, but it allows our team to review the situation and add the cat to the intake wait list if appropriate.

If You Lost a Pet

Call DCHS and the proper local agency to report your pet missing.

Provide a clear photo, pet name, breed, color, age, sex, collar details, microchip information, and last known location.

Post on local lost/found pet Facebook groups and ask neighbors to check cameras, garages, sheds, and barns.

Contact nearby veterinary clinics in case your pet was brought in or scanned for a microchip.

Keep your phone nearby and check messages often in case someone finds your pet.

If You Found a Dog

Do not assume the dog was abandoned. Many lost dogs are close to home and have families looking for them.

Check for an ID tag and contact the owner directly if possible.

If safe, take the dog to a veterinary clinic or shelter to be scanned for a microchip.

Report the found dog to the appropriate agency based on where the dog was found.

Share a photo and general location online, but keep one identifying detail private so an owner can confirm ownership.

Found a Cat?

Outdoor cats may be owned pets, barn cats, or community cats. If the cat appears healthy and is not in danger, it may be best to leave the cat where it is and monitor the situation.

If the cat appears injured, sick, friendly but lost, or in immediate danger, contact DCHS for guidance before relocating it.

If you have found baby kittens, please visit our Found Baby Kittens page before intervening. Their mother may be nearby.

Helpful Reminder

The faster you report, post, and contact the correct local agency, the better the chances of getting a pet home safely. When reporting a found dog, always include the exact location where the dog was found.
