Adoption FAQs

Has my new pet already been vaccinated?

Yes. Your new pet will be current on age-appropriate vaccinations at the time of adoption. After adoption, you are responsible for keeping your pet up to date.

Has my new pet already been spayed or neutered?

Yes. Every pet in the adoption program is spayed or neutered prior to adoption unless special circumstances apply.

What if the adoption does not work out?

DCHS will take back an adopted pet if the adoption does not work out. Please contact the shelter to begin the return process.

Can I get my adoption fee refunded?

In general, adoption fees are not refunded. DCHS encourages adopters to carefully consider the commitment before adopting.

Can I do a trial adoption?

Trial adoptions may be available in certain situations, usually for adult pets and typically for a 7-day period. An application must be submitted in advance.

Can I trial adopt a puppy?

Trial adoptions are usually not offered for puppies or kittens.
