Pet Food Bank
The Dubois County Humane Society has set up a Pet Food Bank in the Southgate Shopping Center, 385 Southgate Center (on the north side of the shopping center by the gazebo) in Jasper. The dog and cat food for this program was donated and designated for this purpose. Please bring plastic containers to take the dog or cat food home with you. Donations for the Food Bank can also be dropped off at this location during the distribution times. Free Spay/Neuter
September 10, 2008 -- Through a partnership with another animal welfare group, the Dubois County Humane Society is offering FREE spay/neuters to all dogs weighing more than 25 pounds (Beagle size or larger). This program is geared towards reducing the unwanted litters of puppies born each year. A litter can consist of 6-11 puppies and are often listed as “free to a home” on bulletin boards and newspaper ads. Please become a part of the solution to the pet overpopulation in our community by participating in this program. This program will continue as long as the allotted funds are available.
This program gives individuals an opportunity to play an active role in reducing the pet overpopulation by signing up for a free dog spay/neuter for the Vanderburgh Humane Society Spay/Neuter transport being held Thursday, September 25. Free dog spay/neuter certificates for local veterinarians will also be available. Other medical treatment, including vaccinations, is not covered under this program.
Through this VHS transport service, pre-registered animals will be picked up by VHS on Thursday, September 25 from the Dubois County Humane Society Pet Adoption Center. They will be taken to the Spay/Neuter Clinic; altered on Thursday; kept overnight for observation; and returned to the Pet Adoption Center for pick up by their owners or caretakers on Friday. This program gives everyone the opportunity to take an active role in decreasing the birthrate of unwanted animals in our county and in surrounding counties at a minimal cost.
Registration for the Thursday, September 25 transport, along with any necessary payment, will be held at the Dubois County Humane Society Pet Adoption Center on Saturdays from 12:30-2:30 pm and Wednesdays 4:30-6:30. The deadline for registration is Saturday, September 20.
The spay/neuter surgery prices through this program are: dogs over 25 pounds, no charge; male dogs under 25 pounds, $60; female dogs under 25 pounds, $70; feral (untamed) cats, $25; male cats, $30; and female cats, $50. Pregnant dogs and cats can also be spayed. Puppies and kittens must be at least 8 weeks old (or 2 lbs.) to be accepted for spay/neuter surgery. Dogs and cats 3 months and older are required by Indiana law to be vaccinated for rabies and if the animal has not already received its vaccination, it will be given at the clinic at an additional charge.
Other services such as vaccinations, flea treatment and heartworm and feline leukemia tests are also available at an additional charge. All animals must be in good health. Any animal showing signs of sickness at time of check-in will be refused and rescheduled. We recommend establishing a relationship with a local veterinarian for vaccinations and a health check prior to the transport and/or booster vaccinations as needed.
For additional information regarding this spay/neuter program, please contact the Humane Society during adoption hours at 482-7387 on Wednesdays 4:30-6:30 or Saturdays 12:30-2:30 or email dchsmail@yahoo.com.

Local Low Cost Spays/Neuters
Local veterinarians in partnership with the Dubois County Humane Society are offering low cost spays and neuters in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens. All the veterinarians in Dubois and Spencer County are participating. They are Animal Medical Center, Dogwood Animal Clinic, Dubois County Animal Hospital, Hasenour Veterinary Clinic, Jasper Pet Clinic, St. Francis Animal Care and Hilltop Veterinary Services.
A limited number of certificates are available each month for each participating veterinarian and can be picked up at the Dubois County Humane Society’s Pet Adoption Center located at 426 Wernsing Road in Jasper during adoption hours which are Saturdays 12:30-2:30 pm and Wednesdays 4:30-6:30 pm. The certificates are not available at the veterinarians’ offices and must be picked up at the Pet Adoption Center.
The reduced cost certificate is valued at 50% off the normal fee for a spay/neuter. This certificate is valid for hospitalization, surgery and anesthesia only. Payment must be made at the veterinarian’s office at the time the animal is dropped off for surgery. If an animal is pregnant or in heat, additional charges may apply. These costs are for the spay/neuter only and do not include vaccinations. It is recommended that pet owners consult with the veterinarian about the vaccinations needed for the health and safety of their pet.
The Humane Society also offers another cost saving option; $15 coupon is available towards the cost of spay/neuter as another option to encourage the public to spay/neuter their pets and any strays in the community.
Low income individuals, people on fixed incomes, people on disability, and people taking in stray or homeless animals are especially encouraged to take advantage of these low cost prices to have their pets altered, although the program is available to everyone.
