"Shaving for Saving" $100,000 Campaign

"Shaving for Saving" is a $100,000 fundraising campaign that has been launched by Terri Stillwell Munch to raise money for the Dubois County Humane Society for abused, neglected and abandoned animals and to raise public awareness of these problems.

Terri is just one of many who has taken in abandoned or neglected animals in our area. The mistreatment of animals is so disheartening to these people because animals do not have a choice of masters or any control in how they are treated.

Terri has pledged to take a stand for what she firmly believes in and will SHAVE HER HEAD if $100,000 is raised for the Dubois County Humane Society by August 18, 2010.

Donations can be made at or mailed to Old National Bank, c/o Dubois County Humane Society "SHAVING FOR SAVING" campaign fund, One DCB Plaza, Jasper, IN 47546. Donations for this campaign can also be made through Paypal here on our website.

Follow the progress of the campaign by becoming a fan of Dubois County Humane Society on Facebook. For more information, contact Terri at terrilynnmunch@gmail.com or phone 812-695-9970 or email the Dubois County Humane Society at dchsmail@yahoo.com or phone 812-482-7387.

Foster Homes Needed

The Dubois County Humane Society is seeking foster care parents. Foster care is an opportunity to care for an animal that isn't yet ready for adoption such as kittens and puppies that are too young for adoption, orphaned kittens or puppies in need of bottle feedings which involves 24 hour care, cats and dogs that are recovering from surgery, illness or an injury, and senior pets or special needs pets that need a special home to live out the rest of their lives.

For more information, see our Foster Program page here .

Pets Help Seniors Live Their Best Lives

In order to communicate the life-enriching benefits of pet ownership among senior citizens, and to help homeless pets find loving homes, the Dubois County Humane Society is partnering with Purina to host adoptions for senior citizens.

Senior citizens aged 60 and older are invited to spend time visiting with the shelter's adoptable dogs and cats and to consider bringing a furry friend into their home. The Pet Adoption Center is located a 426 Wernsing Road in Jasper, IN. Adoption hours are Wednesdays 4:30-6:30 pm and Saturdays 12:30-2:30 pm.

Finding homeless pets permanent homes is the Humane Society's biggest priority. By introducing Dubois County-area seniors to our pets, we are hoping to ensure not only the well-being of our pets, but also the well-being of local seniors.

During the year, animal shelters nationwide are rallying together to encourage local senior citizens to meet their adoptable pets and ultimately find a companion to adopt at $50 less than the adoption fee. The adoption fee for a dog is $25 and for a cat is $5.

"We truly understand the joy and benefits pets bring to people of all ages, especially senior citizens," says Dr. Steve Cohn, a Purina Pets for Seniors veterinarian. "By rallying together with local shelters, we allow seniors to understand the benefits of having a pet as a companion, as well as provide resources to help bring a loving pet into their homes."

Pet Food Bank

The Dubois County Humane Society has set up a Pet Food Bank in the Southgate Shopping Center, 385 Southgate Center (on the north side of the shopping center by the gazebo) in Jasper. The dog and cat food for this program was donated and designated for this purpose. The food is being made available to people who are having a difficult time in finding the resources to feed their pets.

Distribution day is held on the 1st Friday of each month from 4:30-6:30 pm. Please bring plastic containers to take the dog or cat food home with you. Donations for the Food Bank can also be dropped off at this location during the distribution times.

For more information about the Pet Food Bank call the Pet Adoption Center during adoption hours on Wednesdays 4:30-6:30 pm or Saturdays 12:30-2:30 pm or call 634-1955 and leave a message.

Local Low Cost Spays/Neuters

Local veterinarians in partnership with the Dubois County Humane Society are offering low cost spays and neuters in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens. All the veterinarians in Dubois and Spencer County are participating. They are Animal Medical Center, Dogwood Animal Clinic, Dubois County Animal Hospital, Hasenour Veterinary Clinic, Jasper Pet Clinic, St. Francis Animal Care and Hilltop Veterinary Services.

A limited number of certificates are available each month for each participating veterinarian and can be picked up at the Dubois County Humane Society's Pet Adoption Center located at 426 Wernsing Road in Jasper during adoption hours which are Saturdays 12:30-2:30 pm and Wednesdays 4:30-6:30 pm. The certificates are not available at the veterinarians' offices and must be picked up at the Pet Adoption Center.

The reduced cost certificate is valued at 50% off the normal fee for a spay/neuter. This certificate is valid for hospitalization, surgery and anesthesia only. Payment must be made at the veterinarian's office at the time the animal is dropped off for surgery. If an animal is pregnant or in heat, additional charges may apply. These costs are for the spay/neuter only and do not include vaccinations. It is recommended that pet owners consult with the veterinarian about the vaccinations needed for the health and safety of their pet.

The Humane Society also offers another cost saving option; $15 coupon is available towards the cost of spay/neuter as another option to encourage the public to spay/neuter their pets and any strays in the community.

Low income individuals, people on fixed incomes, people on disability, and people taking in stray or homeless animals are especially encouraged to take advantage of these low cost prices to have their pets altered, although the program is available to everyone.

Please email us for more information, or call 482-7387 during adoption hours.
